Companion Animal Cosmetic Alteration Oftentimes, the question of the practice of "cosmetic alteration" arises. So, what is "cosmetic alteration"? Cosmetic alteration is the surgical alteration to a dog, cat or other animal for reasons that have no merit, save for appearance sake. These practices include feline declawing, canine tail docking and canine ear cropping. Feline declawing is usually a procedure that is perpetrated due to behavioral issues with a cat (scratching the furniture, etc). Tail docking is the shortening of a dog's tail, usually done for the purposes of living up to a certain "breed standard". Ear cropping, is the altering of a dog's ears, again for breed standard, by cutting the ears to the point where they will stand erect.
