What is a "breed rescue"?

Breed rescue is a person or group of people engaged in helping a specific breed or type of dog or cat, or other companion animal.  Think of it as a specialized limited intake shelter.  Most breed rescues use a network of foster homes, and have contacts across the country.  Some breed rescues will rehabilitate sick, injured, aggressive or abused animals.

A good example of a breed rescue in action, would go something like this...
A great dane winds up in a shelter in Dade County.  A contact person discovers this fact and calls the representative for great dane rescue.  The rescue then determines the best way to "pull" the dog from the shelter.  They set up temporary housing with a foster family, and take the dog from the shelter to the family.  The dog is then tested for health and temperament problems and readied to be adopted to a new, Forever Home.  Through this action, another dog is destined to find a new home, and another space opens in that shelter for another unwanted dog.

Breeders doing breed rescue?

A good number of individuals involved with breed rescue are current or former breeders of that breed of dog.  While VOCAL is very much against the breeding industry as a whole, we recognize and respect the work done by these people as rescuers.  These folks likely know this breed of dog fairly well, and have a good amount of experience with them.
