Researching a breeder can be a time-consuming act of frustration.  The "reputable" ones make it easy because they don't mind you digging around.  If a breeder is reputable, then what have they got to hide?

Using the links to the left, you can easily research your breeder completely online.  Remember, everything should match up and chain together completely.  You should ask yourself these questions...

Is the kennel owned by the person to whom the phone is registered?
Is the phone unlisted?  Why?
Is the phone registered to another person or address?
Does anything seem odd about the information I'm seeing here?

Let's begin...

Run the kennel's name, if operating under a commercial name as a corporation or d/b/a (doing business as).  Who owns it?  What's the address?  Who is the registered agent?  (this is for the State of Florida only)

Run the owner/breeder through this search to see if the AKC has suspended this person from activities.  It's based on the first two letters of the last name of the person suspended.  If they've been suspended, do you really want to buy a dog from them?

Run the phone number through this information provider.  Does the number match the name of the breeder or owner of the property?  Does the property address match where you'll go to see the dog you want to buy?

Run their property address through the Property Appraiser of the county in which the breeder is located.  This is public record, and you'd be amazed at how many of these "reputable" folks put the wrong address on their registries.  You could then take that property address and run it through Yahoo! maps and take a drive to their place unannounced.  How many of them have a mill stashed away somewhere?

Run their website if they're using one.  Who is the domain registered to?  What's the address?  Go back and run searches on those two pieces of information.

And now the fun part...
Go to www.google.com.  Run separate searches on the breeder's name, kennel and kennel owner's name, phone number, e-mail address, registered agent, etc.  Throw it all at the wall and see what sticks.  You may be very surprised.

Remember that everything you see out there in cyberspace should be taken with a grain of salt.  It's not all fact.  You should make an educated and responsible decision based on what you've found, what you think, and how you feel.

Now, wouldn't it just be easier to go adopt from a shelter or breed rescue?
